A Very Warm Welcome to the School Year

Dr. Scott Woolstenhulme
Superintendent of Schools
Well, we have definitely given students a warm welcome this year. Not only were they warmly greeted by teachers and staff, they were also greeted with extra warm classrooms this past week. We do know that warm rooms can make it harder to teach and learn, and we want you to know we’re paying close attention to the situation.

Don Trauntvein, our incredibly dedicated Energy Specialist, closely monitors classroom temperatures across all 25 D93 school campuses, often 24 / 7. (I wish that was an exaggeration, but it's really not.)

Logs from the past week show classrooms ranging in temps between 74–81 degrees. The graph below shows classroom temperature ranges at Rimrock Elementary as an example. While this is certainly warm, it does not present a hazardous or harmful situation. These higher temperatures typically occur only during the first two weeks and last two weeks of the school year—about one month total.
A line graph shows temperature fluctuations over several days, with peaks at 80 degrees F. .

How Much Would AC Cost?

Installing permanent air conditioning in every school would cost an estimated $30–$50 million districtwide, which is not a practical use of taxpayer resources given how short this situation typically lasts. In the meantime, we continue using portable cooling units, fans, and other measures to help provide relief, and teachers are welcome to keep their doors open (as long as they remain locked for safety).

We’ll continue to monitor conditions closely and share updates as we work to maintain safe, productive learning environments for our students. Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we work through these warm weeks together. This is an example of a sentence to begin a paragraph.

Next Week's Schedule

A school calendar shows the schedule for the week of September 1st to 5th.
Reminder: No school for k-6 tomorrow for Elementary Teacher Collaboration Day.

Middle School and High School Intervention Monday

Monday, September 9th is the first Intervention Monday of the year. Please remember that Mondays are still school days for middle school and high school students. All students should plan to attend school unless you have been notified that they are excused to participate in extended learning opportunities at home. And all students are still welcome to attend school on Mondays, even if they have been excused from in-person attendance.
Also, for high school students, PowerSchool will show two extra classes titled "Intervention Block 1A and Intervention Block 2A". The intervention blocks had to be added to every students schedule so that we could accurately take attendance on Mondays. This change will ensure that we are accurately reporting student attendance to the state for Monday Intervention and support time.

New Entryway and Campus Upgrades Completed at Hillcrest

Principal Mills shows us the new entry way at Hillcrest High School
It’s been a busy summer of construction in Bonneville Joint School District 93, fueled in large part by funding from House Bill 521 (HB 521). The legislation provided more than $1 billion statewide for school facility improvements, with D93 receiving roughly $50 million to invest in needed upgrades.

One of the most visible projects was completed at Hillcrest High School, where a new single-point entryway was finished just in time for the start of the school year. District leaders say the new design is a significant safety improvement, ensuring greater security for students, staff, and visitors.

In addition to the entryway, HB 521 funds also supported a complete upgrade to Hillcrest’s landscape sprinkler system. The modernization project, completed in early August, is already showing results, with fresh green grass beginning to return across the campus.

District officials expressed gratitude to the contractors who carried out the improvements. Headwaters Construction led the entryway project, while Outback Landscaping completed the sprinkler system upgrades.

From Lost to Loved: A Continuous Coat Swap
Last spring, hundreds of unclaimed coats from schools across District 93 were gathered and saved for a special purpose. Through the From Lost to Loved program, these coats are now being given new life by helping students in need stay warm this winter.
If you know of a student without a warm winter coat, requests can easily be submitted using the QR code provided. The Bonneville Education Foundation will deliver a coat directly to the student’s school, ensuring no child goes without warmth this season.
Together, we can turn lost into loved—and keep our students cozy all winter long!
