January Cornerstone: Learning and Literacy

A young boy in a blue t-shirt reads a book, with a quote overlaid: "Being educated isn't about the money you make; it is about the kind of person you learn to become and how you learn to contribute to society." - Matt Randolph

Next Week's Schedule

A school calendar shows class schedules for K-6th and 7th-12th grades from Monday, Jan. 12th to Friday, Jan. 16th.

Open Enrollment Applications Now Open

If you want your child to attend a school other than their zoned school, please submit an open enrollment application.
Applications received by February 1 will receive priority consideration, and we will use the number of applications received by that deadline to help determine staffing at each school. Because school boundaries are changing next year, any student in kindergarten through 6th grade who plans to attend a school other than their zoned school will need to submit an open enrollment application.

Cold Weather Closures

With the change in weather and snow now covering the ground, this is a good time to revisit how we decide when to close or delay school. We want families to know what to expect and how we approach these decisions.

Here's How We Decide
  • By law and Board policy, we keep schools open on scheduled days unless extreme weather or other emergencies make it unsafe for students and staff.
  • We also understand that closures affect families in different ways. Some depend on school meals or have limited child care options, so we take every decision very seriously and try to make the best call for everyone.
Here is a quick, at-a-glance guide to how the process works on winter mornings:

❄️ School Closure Quick Guide

🌨️ Why We Might Close
  • Blizzard conditions that make roads unsafe
  • Temperatures near or below -20°F

⏰ How the Decision Is Made
  • Road and temperature checks begin at 4:30 am
  • District review and decision at 5:30 am

📢 How You’ll Hear from Us
  • ParentSquare notification by 6:00 am
  • Updates shared with local media
  • Posted on the District Facebook page

🤝 Our Commitment to Families
  • We follow state law and Board policy to stay open when it is safe
  • We understand closures affect families differently, so every decision is made with great care

From Scratch to National Spotlight: D93 Child Nutrition Celebrated by USDA

Bonneville School District 93 is celebrating a sweet success in the cafeteria! D93 Child Nutrition was recently honored by the USDA’s Healthy Meals Incentives program with a recognition award for exceptional efforts to enhance the nutritional quality of school meals.

The team was recognized for their creativity and innovation in developing flavorful, from-scratch recipes—most notably Korean pork tacos and roasted chickpeas—that give students healthy, appealing meal options.

According to Child Nutrition Supervisor Heather Plain, Amie Hoffer spearheaded an ambitious revamp of the school lunch menu, adding nearly 30 new items for D93 students. Each new menu item meets the USDA’s rigorous standards for both nutrition and quality.

We couldn’t be prouder of the hard work, creativity, and dedication our Child Nutrition team brings to our schools each day. We’ll take a closer look at this nationally recognized program and the people behind it in next week’s D93 News.
