February Cornerstone: Positivity

This quote feels timely given the stormy weather we are heading into and our focus this month on staying positive. Positivity doesn’t mean pretending challenges don’t exist. It means continuing to show up for each with respect, honesty, and kindness, even when things feel uncertain and especially when we have disagreements.

One storm that we're heading into is a critical budget situation. As I shared with our elementary teachers on Monday, after spending down our fund balance by more than $10 million, we now have to take steps to reduce our budget. The biggest reasons are the return to attendance-based funding and a drop in student enrollment (see graph below). And to make the situation even more complicated, the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee is now calling for school budgets to be cut even more. Because about 90% of our budget is employee pay and benefits, reductions at this scale ultimately require staffing changes.
Bar chart showing elementary enrollment numbers from 2016 to 2025, with a trend line.
Right now, we are working with the School Board to take a big-picture look at the entire budget. When our enrollment and funding were at their high water mark, we were able to start programs and add positions that we have since lost funding for. While no final decisions have been made yet, we are planning to ask voters whether they will support an increase to our supplemental levy before we make any decisions that would cut programs and supports for students.

I understand that news like this can create worry. We know this kind of uncertainty can be stressful for families and for our staff. Over the next month, we will work through this process with the School Board, and once decisions are final, we will communicate them clearly and directly with families. Thank you for your support, and thank you for continuing to partner with us as we keep our focus where it belongs: caring for students and helping them learn.

Unlock College Credit Opportunities for Your Student!

Families of students in grades 7–12 are invited to attend the Advanced Opportunities Workshop on Monday, February 9 at 6:00 p.m. in the Thunder Ridge High School Auditorium. This engaging evening will walk families through the many ways students can earn college credit while still in high school—including Advanced Placement, dual credit, technical programs, Jump Start High School, GEM courses, and more. District and school leaders will also explain eligibility requirements, funding options, and how these opportunities can support a student’s four-year plan and future career pathway. Don’t miss this chance to learn how to get a head start on college and career success!

Open Enrollment Application Deadline Approaching!

If you want your child to attend a school other than their zoned school, please submit an open enrollment application.
Applications received by February 1 will receive priority consideration, and we will use the number of applications received by that deadline to help determine staffing at each school. Because school boundaries are changing next year, any student in kindergarten through 6th grade who plans to attend a school other than their zoned school will need to submit an open enrollment application.

After local and regional rounds, top students will advance to a national final in Washington, D.C., where three national winners will earn scholarships totaling $250,000.
