Superintendent's Message

Positivity and the Stockdale Paradox

In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins shares the story of Admiral James Stockdale, who spent more than seven years as a prisoner of war after his fighter jet was shot down during the Vietnam War. Despite enduring terrible hardships and torture, Stockdale never lost faith that he would eventually prevail. But he also forced himself to confront the brutal facts of his circumstances.
He recalled that some prisoners kept telling themselves they'd be home by Christmas, then Easter, then Thanksgiving. When those hopes weren't realized, they lost hope and perished. Stockdale learned the key was to face the difficult realities of today without losing faith in a better tomorrow.
I think that's an important lesson for all of us, including our kids. Whether they're struggling in school, navigating friendships, or facing disappointments, simply hoping things will get better isn't enough.
Real positivity means cheerfully doing what we can to make things better. It means asking for help, working together, and taking action rather than just wishing our problems away.
We can rarely control the challenges we face, but we can always choose how we face them.

📣 Give a Shout-Out!

As parents, we know how much it means when someone takes a genuine interest in our children, believes in them, and helps them succeed. Sometimes it's the little things—a kind word, an encouraging smile, or someone going out of their way to make a child feel valued—that make the biggest difference.
Every day, our teachers and staff do these things for students across D93, and we'd love your help recognizing them!
Is there a teacher, bus driver, instructional assistant, secretary, custodian, or other D93 employee who has made a positive difference for your child or family? We'd love to hear about it!
Take a moment to Give a D93 Shout-Out! and help us celebrate the incredible people who make our schools great.

🏰 D93 Attendance Challenge: It's Time to Rally! Is Here!

We're off to a slower start than we hoped in the D93 Healthy Attendance Challenge, presented by Cafe Sabor! Our goal is to increase districtwide attendance by two percentage points, but we're not there yet. We need everyone's help to turn things around!
From October 1 through November 20, D93 students can earn up to four entries into a drawing for an incredible Disneyland vacation for a family of four, including airfare from Idaho Falls, hotel accommodations near Disneyland, and three-day park tickets!
🎟️ Two Ways to Earn Entries:
  • Strong Attendance: Students earn entries by attending 30–32 days (K–6) or 33–35 days (grades 7–12).
  • Improved Attendance: Students can also earn entries by attending 2, 4, 6, or 8 more days than during the same period last year.
Students receive the higher number of entries earned through either option, up to four total. The lucky winner will be announced before Christmas Break!
💛 D93 Families, Let's Rally! Every healthy school day matters, and together we can get back on track. Help us reach our districtwide goal while giving your student a chance at a magical family vacation!
Remember: Attend when healthy. Stay home when sick. Let's make every healthy school day count!

Health Minute

🩺 EIRMC Health Minute: Allergic Reactions — When Should You Go to the ER?

Allergic reactions can happen unexpectedly, whether triggered by food, insect stings, medications or environmental allergens. While most reactions are mild, some can become life-threatening in a matter of minutes.
Our friends at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC) remind families that knowing the warning signs can make all the difference.
Mild allergic reactions may include itching, hives, sneezing, watery eyes or minor swelling. These symptoms can often be monitored at home with guidance from a healthcare provider.
Call 911 immediately if your child experiences difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, trouble swallowing, fainting or severe vomiting accompanied by other allergy symptoms. These could be signs of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction requiring immediate treatment.
If your child has a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector, use it immediately when signs of anaphylaxis appear and call 911. Emergency medical evaluation is still necessary, even if symptoms improve.
Being prepared can save a life! Know your child's allergy triggers, keep prescribed medications accessible and work with your healthcare provider to develop an allergy action plan.
